FOIA requests

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a law that enables members of the public to request records from the government. The Privacy Act provides individuals a way to request access to records about them.

The Bureau’s FOIA Office is Open For Business

How to Reach Us

While we navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bureau’s FOIA team remains committed to transparency and responsiveness. To receive the quickest response, please contact the Bureau’s FOIA team by email.

Update on access to U.S. mail, overnight mail, and fax services

The FOIA team currently has limited access to U.S. mail and overnight mail services and is no longer accepting fax communications. This means our responses to mail inquiries may be delayed.

If you submitted a FOIA request or appeal to the Bureau by U.S. mail, overnight mail services, or fax and have not received an acknowledgement of receipt by the Bureau, we recommend resubmitting or following up by email to confirm receipt.

Expected timeframe

The amount of time it takes to process each request varies based on complexity. However, the CFPB will make every attempt to provide a response within the timeframes outlined in the FOIA statute.
